“ Oh my heavenly delicious Pizza Mystic Pizza has been a frequent stop during my trips to CT. Always a great stepping inside their wonderful restaurant that's riddled with much homage & the old school feel that is often missed. Come in to grab a slice at their bar, or come sit for a full dining experience. Either way, you're going to enjoy their pizza Our server certainly left a lasting impression. He was all smiles, wicked friendly and full of energy which made the experience all the sweeter. ”
“ Mystic Pizza is a Greek-style pizzeria that opened in Mystic, Connecticut in 1973. It was founded by husband and wife Greek immigrants Stefanos and Fotini "Fofi" Zelepos. Not long after relocating to Mystic from Greece, the Zelepos family bought a pizza parlor named Ted's Pizza in downtown Mystic and renamed it "Mystic Pizza". In the 1980s, screenwriter Amy Holden Jones was summering in Mystic. After visiting the pizzeria, she felt inspired to write a screenplay that used the pizzeria and the town as its setting. Jones also thought that "Mystic Pizza" sounded like a good name for a film. The romantic-comedy focuses around the lives of three young waitresses who work at the pizzeria. Instead of being Greek-American, most of the characters in the film are Portuguese-American. Filming took place in Mystic and the surrounding towns. The production didn't film at the real Mystic Pizza as it was too small and the Zelepos family were not willing to close down for six weeks. Instead a pizzeria set was constructed in nearby Stonington. Released in October 1988, "Mystic Pizza" was met with both commercial and critical acclaim and made a star out of a young actress named Julia Roberts. It also made a star out of the pizzeria: business exploded after the release of the film! A second pizzeria dubbed "Mystic Pizza II" opened in North Stonington in 1991. The Zelepos family expanded the original location in 1996 when they purchased the laundromat next door and made the interior resemble the look of the pizzeria in the film. They even partnered with a company to produce and market a brand of frozen pizzas. Today the business is run by sons John, Christos & George Zelepos. The film didn't just turn the pizzeria into a tourist destination, but rather the whole town of Mystic. A stage musical based on the film even premiered in 2021. Fans of the film keep coming to Mystic Pizza to find their own 'slice of heaven'. I visited Mystic Pizza for dinner this past summer while I was passing through Mystic with some friends. Although I've lived in Connecticut my whole life, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I had never been to Mystic Pizza nor watched the movie (I have since watched it and enjoyed it). The interior is loaded with memorabilia from the film: posters, t-shirts, hats, mugs, DVDs... you name it! My friends and I shared a large "Half Cheese/Half Pepperoni" pie and a side of "Mozzarella Sticks". I personally feel that Greek-style pizza doesn't hold a candle to New Haven-style, but this pizza was pretty good. I'm not the biggest fan of doughy crust, but I really enjoyed the sauce. The staff were pretty friendly and helpful too. Overall, I had an enjoyable experience at Mystic Pizza and would like to return again with my wife and sons so they too can taste a 'slice of heaven'. ”
“ Just a good, decent slice of pizza. It's not New York style, but it's tasty nonetheless. My wife compared it, favorably to the kind of pizza that Domino's aspires to be. The crust is chewy, not particularly crisp, the sauce has good flavor, and the cheese is gooey and delicious. Despite no sighting of Julia Roberts or Matt Damon, it was worth this tourist's time and will be worth yours too! ”
“ Can't go to Mystic without going to Mystic Pizza. Full disclosure, I have never seen the movie. There is lots of nostalgia and movie memorabilia around the restaurant. There is a tv with the movie playing in the main dining area. Frank Sinatra and other similar music is playing overhead. There is the main dining room, bar area, upstairs outdoor seating, and a few small tables on the sidewalk. The upstairs seating opens at 12. I really enjoyed the food. We started with fried meatballs. Very crispy on the outside with a great sauce. Very flavorful and a nice mix in the meat. The pizza was also very good. It came out hot so we had to take a quick pause. Really good sauce and cheese. The cheese was very gooey and had a nice pull. I would definitely come back and would sit outside the next time. ”
“ This place is worth the hype. Deep dish, thick crust, well cooked, great flavor. The dining areas have tons of memorabilia to take in along with movie shots and videos. A tourist attraction for sure. It still feels very loved and homey. Good service. You pay for the name but that isn't a bad thing here when the food is good. ”
“ Of course I had to come by this place while I'm in New England. Who's not seen the movie "Mystic Pizza"? Upon entering we were immediately greeted. Ordered a cheese slice and a pepperoni slice and a beer and soda. The place is laid back casual where you can enjoy a slice and a beer. The place has some memorabilia from the movie and a nice selection of souvenirs. The crust is uniquely crispy but tender and chewy inside. The pepperoni wasn't oily and the pizza wasn't dripping of grease. Nice flavor and balanced. I had gotten a nice local beer called Mystic Pizza Lager. Very and crisp flavor. It went well with my slice. Check it out even if you're not a movie fan. ”
“ Some place after they get their popularity they give lack of service and food. MYSTIC PIZZA IS NOT ONE OF THEM!! Food, service number 1 Great location very accommodating. Started with Mystic salad, mesclun greens, walnuts, cranberries balsamic vinegar. Grecian pizza was spectacular!!! Meat pizza was ok. Overall great job!! ”
